Correction

A story in the Jan. 10 issue of the Monitor on California teacher competency was in error. It said that in 1978 teachers in the Lemon Grove Unified School District tested at an eighth-grade level in spelling and grammar and seventh grade in math. In fact, in 1978 the Lemon Grove School District began giving a test, which the district superintendant estimated to require the skills needed for eighth-grade work. The test was of applicants for teaching positions, not for teachers already employed by the system. Some 30 percent of the applicants initially failed one or more parts of the test. The test was not administered to the district's teachers.
