Fired EPA aide denies any wrongdoing at agency

Rita Lavelle, fired two weeks ago as assistant administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, told a congressional committee she had done nothing wrong in managing the government's toxic-waste cleanup.

She said that she never shredded or withheld papers from Congress and thatthere was no concrete evidence she made any sweetheart deals with companies involved with the waste sites. Meanwhile, scientists say little is known about the danger and location of those sites (see Page 3).
