CLASSICAL Prokofiev, Sergei: ''Love for Three Oranges'' (Symphonic Suite), Op. 33a. Symphony No. 1 in D, Op. 25; ''Lieutenant Kije,'' (Symphonic Suite), Op. 60. London Philharmonic Orchestra, Enrique Batiz. (Angel Digital DS - 37960). A generous selection of Prokofiev, expertly performed, stunningly recorded. Batiz does not always get all the acidity out of the music, but he sure gets the beauty. I have rarely heard a more beautiful account of the ''Classical'' symphony. The ''Kije'' suite is particularly handsomely performed. Musically, the works on this disc offer a good cross-section of Prokofiev's career, from the daring wit of the ''Classical'' symphony, through to the regime-dictated ''simplicity'' (with touches of the past cleverly buried in the music) that marked (some say marred) his style once he returned to stay in the Soviet Union in the 1930s.
