Agca reenacts shooting of Pope in legal inquiry

Turkish gunman Mehmet Ali Agca reenacted Tuesday his shooting of Pope John Paul II in a closed-off segment of Via Della Conciliazione, the broad street leading to St. Peter's. A squad of armed police in bulletproof jackets watched Agca while he retraced his movements for the benefit of Bulgarian and Italian magistrates. The reconstruction was requested by the lawyers of Sergei Antonov, a Bulgarian held in custody in Italy for suspected involvement in the attempt. Agca's lawyer told reporters that the reconstruction put Agca's claims of Antonov's involvement beyond doubt, but Antonov's lawyers said nothing new had emerged.
