Once-handicapped skater sets an endurance record

Dutch skater Hans Homma logged a record 254 miles in a 24-hour endurance test back and forth along Ottawa's Rideau Canal. His teeth were chattering with cold and exhaustion when he talked to reporters Wednesday night after finishing.

Mr. Homma, a farmer, was told 10 years ago he would be lucky to walk again after he was injured in a car accident. ''People always say, 'I can't, I can't,' and I was determined to say, 'I can, I can,' '' he said.

Trainer Ben Scheperkamp said no one had done more than 190 miles in previous round-the-clock tests.
