Foes of apartheid condemn South African constitution

An anti-apartheid group Wednesday condemned a new constitution that excludes South Africa's more than 20 million blacks from sharing power and vowed to boycott elections for a new Parliament.

"We oppose the new constitution because it is nothing more than an entrenchment of apartheid and because it exclueds a large section of the population of our country," said Patrick Lekota, political secretary for the United Democratic Front, an interracial South African political group.

Chris Heunis, South Africa's minister of constitutional development and planning, said in Cape Town Tuesday that elections would be held Aug. 22 for new Asian and "Colored" houses in a proposed three-chamber Parliament.
