US drops plans to seek censure on European steel

The United States and the European Community defused a major trade dispute over steel Tuesday as the United States announced it was dropping plans to have the Community condemned by the trade body GATT.

The United States said that following Monday's agreement in high-level talks with the Community in Brussels, it was withdrawing its plan to seek an unprecedented international condemnation of the Community here in the Council of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).

The United States had planned to make a formal request to have the 90-nation GATT Council ''disapprove'' of retaliatory high tariffs and lower import quotas the Community had announced on some US products.

The moves were sparked by US restrictions on importance of special steels.
