Conakry radio, monitored here, said the 18-member Military Redemption Committee, which ended 26 years of socialist rule when it seized power in a coup Tuesday, named Col. Lansana Conte as president and Col. Diarra Traore as prime minister.

Guineans have welcomed Tuesday's coup, foreign residents said. The sources, contacted from Abidjan by telephone after communications were restored with the outside world, said there was popular rejoicing in the streets of Conakry, Guinea's capital.

They said most Guineans they spoke with hoped the military redemption committee would abide by its pledge to promote free enterprise and respect individual freedoms.
