Going, going, gone - till she's fit for centennial

Soon to be completely swathed in a cocoon of steel scaffolding, New York's Statue of Liberty will undergo a $30 million renovation of her copper robes - inside and out - to be completed in time for her centennial in 1986. More than $ 25 million has been set aside for a series of celebrations in coming years.

An overall goal of $230 million has been set for a fund-raising drive that has netted $74 million so far. In addition to renovating the statue, the money will refurbish the statue's pedestal, make various improvements on Liberty and Ellis Islands, create an educational fund, and form an endowment to maintain the lady who has welcomed so many millions of immigrants to the shores of the United States.
