Amnesty: coup try sparks retribution in Cameroon
Dozens of people have been executed and hundreds are being tried secretly by military tribunals after an attempted coup attempt against Cameroon's President Paul Biya last month, Amnesty International said Tuesday.
A spokesman for the London-based human rights group told Reuters news agency that 35 people had been executed May 1 ''and the indications are that further death sentences are on the way.''
''It is extremely worrying that the executions were carried out within 24 hours of the convictions and that the accused were not permitted any right of appeal,'' Stephen Ellis said.
The authorities had neither confirmed nor denied the executions. ''But we are certain they took place,'' Mr. Ellis said.
