Louisiana governor asks for more state aid for fair

''None of us can even think about the fair closing,'' Mr. Edwards said Tuesday, ''because the impact of its closure would send a shock wave throughout the business community in the New Orleans area and create a very serious PR problem for the state.''

Attendance is at the heart of the fair's cash problem. It has improved lately but was so low in May that income was just enough to cover operations and payments.
