Mines in Suez damage ships; US sends investigation team
At least nine merchant ships have been damaged by mine explosions in the Gulf of Suez and the Red Sea since July 27, Lloyds Shipping Intelligence in London said Saturday. None had sunk. The US Navy has sent a team of 15 experts in mine-warfare to Cairo to help the investigation.
Qatar state radio said a group calling itself Islamic Holy War claimed responsibility for mining the Red Sea to ''punish imperialism.''
