Union Carbide lawsuits pose complex legal battle

Lawsuits being brought against Union Carbide over deaths and injuries caused by the gas leak at its Indian plant are becoming the most complex civil legal battle the world has known, US legal experts say.

At least five teams of American lawyers so far have brought suits amounting to $85 billion on behalf of 125,000 injured plaintiffs and the survivors of 2, 500 dead victims in Bhopal.

In Washington, State Department official Robert Peck says the gas-leak disaster in India could prompt the government to consider requiring US companies to apply domestic health and safety standards to their overseas operations. US-based multinational corporations are now free to follow their consciences or the safety laws of foreign nations.
