WAR SUMMARY

The eighth week of European war today found the belligerents - Finland and Britain against Germany - trying to break each other by blockade, by propaganda and diplomacy rather than by the wasting blood of land warfare. On the West Front quiet was almost generally restored as the French, having withdrawn their forces, sent forward into German territory to support the Poles, to the shelter of the main Maginot defenses, allowed the Germans to retake the territory without resistance. A rain-soaked no-man's land separates the two armies.

At sea British shipping sustained two more losses through sinkings, raising the total British vessels sunk to 40, and known shipping losses to all nations to 83 craft.
