RECYCLING CAR BATTERIES

Thirty-three states now have recycling laws for the lead batteries used in cars and boats, according to the Battery Council International, an industry group. Five other states have banned disposal of the batteries. A typical battery contains 18 pounds of lead, 11 pounds of sulfuric acid, and three pounds of plastic that can be recycled. Gas stations and battery retailers often act as drop-off sites for recycling.
