Evening News From Moscow (C-Span, 6-6:30 p.m., E.T.): A Russian broadcast with simultaneous English translation. * FRIDAY

The Defense Rests: A Tribute to Raymond Burr (NBC, 8-9 p.m.): I can remember him in George Stevens's haunting 1951 film ``A Place in the Sun.'' He was a huge, sonorous, truly intimidating district attorney, who at one point swung an oar overhead and crashed it onto the floor to show the jury how he thought Montgomery Clift killed Elizabeth Taylor.

But the late actor is best-known in the title role of TV's ``Perry Mason'' (1957-1966) and ``Ironside'' (1967-1975). This salute - cohosted by Bill Cosby and Barbara Hale (she starred with Burr in ``Perry Mason'') - not only offers clips from past shows, but is also immediately followed by a re-airing of ``Perry Mason: The Case of the Tell-Tale Talk Show Host'' (NBC, 9-11 p.m. E.T.), the last original ``Perry Mason'' movie broadcast prior to Burr's death. (The TV movie ``The Return of Ironside'' will re-air Friday, Oct. 29, 9-11 p.m.; Burr's final show, ``Perry Mason: The Case of the Killer Kiss,'' is slated for airing sometime in November.)

Meanwhile, the program offers interviews with Burr's friends and fellow actors, looks at his personal interests, and screens clips from ``Perry Mason'' episodes in which he lost the case (yes, it has happened), as well as from early Burr movies like ``Rear Window'' and - let's face it - ``Godzilla, King of the Monsters.''

Secrets of the Moche (The Learning Channel, 8-9 p.m.): They made gold masks that were complex and sophisticated. They created splendid murals, architecture, clothing, and metalwork. Their ear ornaments had tiny moving parts. How this early Peruvian civilization, the Moche, accomplished such impressive and often exquisite feats - especially in the face of an often brutal culture - is the topic of this documentary, part of the channel's ``Ancient Journeys'' anthology.
