Christopher Seeks Solution for Syria, Israel

SYRIA said yesterday that the United States was intensifying its efforts to break the deadlock between Syria and Israel, and that US Secretary of State Warren Christopher would return to Damascus tomorrow for more talks.

Syria welcomed Washington's efforts and expressed hope that Mr. Christopher, who delayed his departure from the Syrian capital for several hours, would achieve success in his mission.

Christopher left Damascus for Israel yesterday for unscheduled meetings with Foreign Minister Farouq al-Shara. Christopher will meet today with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

Syria, which opened talks with Israel in the Middle East peace conference in 1991, wants Israel to withdraw fully from the Golan Heights it occupied in 1967. Israel seeks normal ties with Damascus. Iran in Mecca

IRAN said Saudi Arabia reinforced riot police in the holy city of Mecca yesterday after Iranian pilgrims held a meeting in solidarity with Bosnian Muslims.

The Saudis ban political activities during the hajj, the annual pilgrimage. Another Iranian-led rally was planned for today.
