All day the gulls and the blackbirds

Have gathered, wing streaks in rain;

About these ads

I wonder what they say as they chatter,

Facing one other in darkened assembly

Under the clouds' gray shawls.

What would we say, gathering to leave

Our cities and towns, taking only

Our language with us, our maps

Of the night sky as the cold bore down?
