The softness of snow

The snow, falling in huge flakes,

drifts over the grass and earth,

piles against the side of the barn,

falls gracefully through the air.

This soft snow covers

the hard ground, the evergreens,

the cracked road.

I make my way

down a path that other boots have made.

The world, so silent and remote,

hushes. I swear I can hear

my own heart beating.

Such a splendid land

wearing its huge muffler of snow,

and I am walking through it,

the sound of my boots hitting the ground,

the only sound to be heard for miles.
