Plenty left to chance at the office

The men's college basketball champ will be crowned tonight. And many people are betting their coworkers that Duke will beat the University of Connecticut.

A recent survey conducted by Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) found that such gambling in the workplace is rampant.

More than 30 percent of the 500 human resource professionals who responded to the survey said that they take part in NCAA basketball tournament office pools.

Yet the survey found workplace gambling extends far beyond basketball:

*58 percent said they take part in Super Bowl pools.

*55 percent gamble in regular season football pools.

*39 percent combine money to buy lottery tickets.

*11 percent bet on fantasy football leagues.

Despite the results, a majority of survey respondents said that their organizations do not have written policies that address gambling. And more than half of those surveyed said that gambling has no effect on worker productivity.
