Lagoon chorus

A stately blue heron appears each day at four

to fish for his evening meal.

About these ads

At the edge of the marsh a wood stork stands

clumsy on one black leg,

then lurches away to find his prey.

At dusk, an invisible signal goes out to all.

Raucous quacking begins to mount,

reverberates when tree frogs join the chorus

with strident squawks and croaks

About these ads

until the sound distends the air.

Suddenly silence.

Total silence.

Who waves the baton

out there?
