Jerry Jasinowski
Jerry Jasinowski, president of the National Association of Manufacturers, was Thursday's guest. Here are excerpts from his remarks:
"As we go forward into 2004 we will see hiring by manufacturers. The biggest ... will be in sectors that had the biggest losses: machinery, computers and software, and transportation."
"[It's] escalating costs. We have about a 25 percent competitive disadvantage [versus] our competitors, and a lot of that is government-imposed."
"We get rebuffed and rejected all the time."
"We are in transition to a highly technology-oriented manufacturing and service economy. This notion that we are going to go from manufacturing to [nothing but] services is absurd."
"It is the greatest threat to free trade on the horizon. We have got a protectionist force brewing, largely because of the totally one- sided aspect of trade with China."
"Chief executives, in terms of trend lines, are overpaid. This is basically a deficiency of board governance."
