2. Dave the Potter: Artist, Poet, Slave, illustrated by Bryan Collier

"Dave the Potter: Artist, Poet, Slave," illustrated by Bryan Collier and written by Laban Carrick Hill (ages 4-8, Little, Brown and Company, 40 pp.) is a 2011 Caldecott Honor Book. The inspiring story of Dave, who was a slave on a South Carolina farm, focuses on his craft – pottery. (Dave is known to have created about 40,000 pots.) Evocative language draws the reader into Dave’s creative process and earthy illustrations bring the Southern landscape to life.
