2. Working with John Ford

Being on the set of a John Ford film was legendarily difficult, as many actors who worked with him have attested. "There was an essence of fear in every Ford camp," Frank Baker, an actor who worked with Ford during the director's early career, said. "He always picked on somebody at the beginning of a picture, and he'd let them have it.... You couldn't do anything right. And he just sat there with that flat voice, and he would attack you; he'd humiliate you. He'd make you grovel."
