In this 1986 photo, a helicopter throwing chemicals to suppress radiation approaches the destroyed fourth reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. On May 12, 1986, more than two weeks after the explosion, the leading Soviet daily newspaper Pravda published its first photograph from the site, shot three days earlier from a helicopter by Mr. Repik.
