6 - The Hollywood Sign: Located on Los Angeles's Hollywood Hills, these 45-foot tall white letters were created in 1923 as an advertisement for a housing development called Hollywoodland, but were left up. The last four letters were eventually removed. Publisher Hugh Hefner recently made news by donating $900,000 toward the purchase of land behind the sign.
