Home to Pakistan's West Point
Abbottabad is known as the home to the Pakistani Military Academy, the country’s version of West Point, as well as a military base. According to sources in the city who spoke to the Monitor, the firefight that ended with the capture of bin Laden’s body occurred only 800 yards from the military school – placing Bin Laden's secret compound only minutes from a high concentration of Pakistani military officials.
“But people insist they didn’t realize it was [bin Laden]. This city is full of soldiers. Hard to believe someone didn’t know.” tweeted Associated Press correspondent Nahal Toosi from Abbottabad.
