Israeli settlement policy is condemned in Europe
The Parliamentary Assembly of the 21-nation Council of Europe Wednesday condemned Israel's settlement policy in the occupied territories and called on it to recognize the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination. The Assembly called for a spirit of compromise in the Middle East and a new European effort to find peace in the region.
The resolution said the Camp David accords between Israel and Egypt could not , up to now, be seen as a basis for a comprehensive Middle East agreement. An Asssembly committee drafted the resolution after several months of investigation into the Middle East situation and visits here by the foreign ministers of Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and Syria.
