Salvadoran rebels, angry with US, weigh new drive

Fighting continued between government forces and leftist guerrillas amid reports that the insurgents planned a major onslaught to coincide with Ronald Reagan's inauguration. The guerrillas, who began a final offensive 11 days ago that has resulted in more than 1,000 deaths, are angered by renewal of US military aid to El Salvador. Last week the United States renewed nonlethal military aid worth $5 million. Diplomatic sources said this was soon to be doubled, and would include arms.

Meanwhile in Guatemala it was reported that an upsurge of politically motivated violence continued to swee p the country.
