Illinois Senate on horns of a two-party dilemma

A heated partisan political squabble has left Illinois in the odd predicament of having two state Senates and two rival Senate presidents. Senate Democrats, with high drama and in retaliation for a Republican coup Jan. 15, staged their own countercoup Tuesday 15 minutes before the Senate was to convene by claiming control of the Senate presidency. Republicans refused to turn over the reins, effectively leaving the state with two Senates. The Illinois Supreme Court will likely end up deciding which party will get the powerful pres idency.
