North and South Koreans exchange fire at DMZ
North and South Korean forces exchanged more than 1,000 rounds of machine-gun fire across their Demilitarized Zone as the North Koreans attempted to shoot an Army defector, military officials said. The defector, a sergeant, reached the South Korean side safely and said North Korea has stepped up war preparations as its people suffer from serious economic difficulty. The shooting caused no casualties among the South Korean troops guarding the area, a United Nations Command spokesman said. None of the some 40,000 American troops in South Korea are in the area.
