Reagan firm on tax cut, Lefever

A President who now has set his jaw and refuses to give further ground -- on either the tax-cut proposal or the Emest Leferer appointment -- is pictured by a key aide, Lyn Nofziger, Monitor correspondent Godfrey Sperling Jr. reports.

Mr. Nofziger, the President's chief political adviser, said in an interview Tuesday that Mr. Reagan must have a tax cut including all three years.

"A chance of 30 months?" he was asked. "No," he said, "I don't think theris any give at all."

The thrust of the Nofziger comments, made shortly after he had met with the President, was that Mr. Reagan now has given the House Democrats pretty much a take-it-leave-it proposition.

Further, Nofziger sounded as though the President was already mapping out a lobbying strategy aimed at persuading House Democrats to jump ship and vote for the Reagan proposal -- a course he followed in winning his budget fight.

Nofziger also said the President definitely would not withdraw the Lefever appointment to the position of secretary of state for human rights and humanitarian affairs.
