Automobile workers want political candidates to ditch their Toyotas and Hondas and hit the hustings in a Ford, Chevy, or Chrysler.

Political action committees of the United Automobile Workers in Michigan have warned candidates that the PACs will refuse financial and other support to anyone ''so insensitive to the needs of jobless auto workers'' that they drive foreign-made cars.

Few wise politicians in Michigan do, but foreign-made cars are found in large numbers on government parking lots in Washington. With congressional contests looming and labor support now being sought, many candidates may find it awkward to be seen driving an import.

Meanwhile, the New York State AFL-CIO has reacted strongly against a New York City decision to buy subway cars made in Japan.
