Ousted Bangladesh leader backs coup, faces action

Ousted President Abdus Sattar addressed the nation on radio and television and endorsed the military coup that unseated him. Mr. Sattar said the military takeover was ''inevitable'' in the face of growing political and economic problems and wished success to the new regime.

But later military authorities announced that former presidents and ministers could be punished under new martial law regulations, some of which carry a death penalty. At least six prominent political figures have already been arrested.
