Italy's new government clinches confidence vote

Italy's 42nd overnment since World War II, a five-party coalition led by Prime Minister Giovanni Spadolini, won a parliamentary vote of confidence by a wide margin.

The vote in the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Parliament, was 357 in favor and 247 opposed. The opposition was led by the powerful Communist Party , which was shut out of the government. The new government is a carbon copy of Mr. Spadolini's Cabinet that fell Aug. 7.
