Wave of anticrime bills to be debated in Senate
The Senate, beginning today, faces a week of anticrime debate. Senate majority leader Howard Baker (R) of Tennessee warned members Friday to be prepared for a host of anticrime bills - including restoration of the death penalty for murders that fall under federal jurisdiction, the creation of a Cabinet-level post for the fight against illegal drugs, and changes in what evidence is admissible in court.
On an 84-0 vote, the Senate Friday approved and gave the House a measure which for the first time would allow federal judges to deny bail to criminals who pose ''a danger to the community.''
The Senate Thursday gave nearly unanimous approval to a comprehensive revision of the nation's criminal laws, including a reversal of the insanity defense.
