Chicago mayor lends support to Jackson
Harold Washington, Chicago's first black mayor, threw his support behind the Rev. Jesse Jackson Wednesday in the March 20 Illinois primary election. Mr. Washington stopped short of a full-scale endorsement of Mr. Jackson, however, saying Jackson was only his ''preference'' for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.
But in urging Illinois voters to show their support for Jackson in the primary he called him ''a man of enormous eloquence and provocative ideas.''
Washington also said he planned to lead a ''massive voter registration drive'' similar to the one Jackson has been conducting among blacks.
