Lebanese President, after stop in Libya, sees leaders in Italy
Lebanese President Amin Gemayel arrived in Rome Tuesday for a one-day visit after an overnight stop in Tripoli, Libya, to meet with Col. Muammar Qaddafi. Officials said Mr. Gemayel would hold separate meetings with President Sandro Pertini, Premier Bettino Craxi, and Foreign Minister Giulio Andreotti and would also be received by Pope John Paul II at the Vatican before returning to Beirut in the evening.
Virtually no details were given of Gemayel's visit to Libya, his second since he took office in 1982. A group of Lebanese opposition leaders headed by Druze militia chieftain Walid Jumblatt visited Libya last week. Libya has strongly supported antigovernment forces in recent rounds of the Lebanese civil war.
