Shultz welcomes Soviet 'maybe' to summit proposal
Soviet President Konstantin Chernenko said that while the time was not ripe for a summit with President Reagan, a meeting could come in the future if it looked as though it would achieve results. Chernenko's comments came in a letter to NBC television, read during the Friday evening broadcast. The letter was in response to written questions from the network.
Secretary of State George Shultz, in a live interview on NBC Nightly News, welcomed the statement as ''positive'' and said the time had come for private, rather than public, diplomatic moves between the two nations.
