Purchased: a trumpet for her 12-year-old son

Her bent back and raw hands are in it hung against his livingroom wall painted white like the ghost it is. Thirty bucks was a heap for a small-town Alabama woman who washed and ironed for other folks. But she heard the music - taut talking notes for crowded clubs up north - before he played it, and she liked the sound.
