UN BEGINS AIRLIFT OF NAMIBIAN REFUGEES

The United Nations Monday flew 150 Namibians back to their homeland at the start of an airlift that will bring thousands of refugees from Zambia and Angola home. Officials say it will cost $39 million to bring the refugees for the election campaign, which begins July 1, and the November vote. Both will be held under a UN-sponsored peace treaty granting the Namibia independence.

Many Namibians fled their homeland to Angola and Zambia over the years to escape the war being fought between nationalists and South Africa for control of Namibia.
