MORE AMERICANS PUT ON WINGS
Deregulation of the airlines has continued to make travel by air more popular in the United States. The Air Transport Association reports that a record 145 million Americans, or 78 percent of the adult population, have flown. During 1989, 35 percent of adult Americans boarded an aircraft to fly somewhere. Fifty-one percent of trips taken were for business, 49 percent for personal pleasure.
Frequent fliers (more than 10 trips in 1989) were only 6 percent of fliers, but accounted for 41 percent of the trips taken.
