Clinton-Gore Tour Ends

THE Bill and Al Road Show that the two Democrats hope will carry them to the White House wound up its last full day on a 1,000-mile bus caravan through America's heartland, boosted by a significant lead in polls and enthusiastic crowds along the way.

Late Tuesday night the road show motored into this one-time state capital for a rally before Democratic presidential candidate Bill Clinton and vice presidential running mate Al Gore head for their last stop in St. Louis.

The Secret Service said 5,500 people live in this working-class southern Illinois town, but an estimated 11,000 Clinton and Gore fans showed up for the rally.

A long-time resident said it was the biggest crowd he had ever seen in Vandalia.

Some of the supporters jumped and shouted their approval of the candidates.
