Snapshots of the Century

MERIDEN, CONN. - 1928

George Connor's great-uncle was the manager of the Economy Grocery on West Main Street. His name was George Goodrich, and he's the man wearing the white apron in the photo at right. (The man at the back of the store is unidentified.) Mr. Connor fondly recalls Great-Uncle George's wife, Betty, his grandmother's sister, and says of this image: 'I have always treasured the photo.... The cans in neat rows, the advertisements on the wall, the wooden floors ... evoke the era in a way that transcends the written word.'
