Da Bears are back

After Sunday's improbable comeback victory over the San Francisco 49ers, the Chicago Bears are 5-1, their best start since 1990.

"It's still very early in the season," says coach Dick Jauron. "But to be 5-1 at this point is real exciting for us. We'll do everything we can to keep it going."

That the Bears have gotten this far has been one of the NFL's biggest surprises. Rookies David Terrell and Anthony Thomas have played only six games, but already have shown big-time talent. Brian Urlacher and Mike Brown, the first- and second-round picks in 2000, are cornerstones of one of the league's best defenses. "The goal is to keep winning and keep everybody healthy, get into the playoffs, and hopefully, the ball bounces your way," says offensive lineman Shane Matthews.

Jeter keeps series going

Derek Jeter already saved the New York Yankees' season in October. He might have saved the World Series for them in November. Jeter homered in the 10th inning Wednesday night, celebrating with a two-footed jump onto the plate and giving New York a thrilling 4-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The first game-ending home run of Jeter's career tied the series at 2-2, going into last night's game.

A game that belonged to Curt Schilling most of the night slipped away when Tino Martinez hit a two-run homer to tie it in the ninth."We always feel as though we have a chance to win a game," Jeter said.

Nebraska's new celebrity

A week ago, not many Nebraska students knew who Mike Stuntz was. Now he's one popular freshman. It's amazing what a 63-yard touchdown pass can do. The touchdown sealed the Cornhuskers' 20-10 win over defending national champion Oklahoma last weekend. It vaulted 9-0 Nebraska to No. 1 in the BCS college football rankings.

Stuntz, a backup quarterback who is playing receiver this fall, doesn't understand what all the fuss is. "If that's what I get remembered for, at least it's something positive," he said.
