Westminster Dog Show 2011: The five best dog books to read before, during, and after

5. Amazing Gracie: A Dog's Tale, by Dan Dye

Dan Dye was grieving the loss of his dog and feeling trapped in a joyless career when he met Gracie, a deaf, partially blind, albino Great Dane puppy – the runt of the litter whom nobody wanted. Amazing Gracie: A Dog's Tale tells how Dye took Gracie home, saved her, and gave her a life filled with love.

In exchange, Gracie's presence in Dye's life brought him a new career – he founded Three Dog Bakery, a business borne out of Gracie's difficult eating habits – and turned him into a minor celebrity.

This is an inspiring story but prepare to shed some tears as well. (Hint: Great Danes do not live very long lives.) Dye so successfully evokes Gracie's presence that it's almost as hard for readers to finally bid her farewell as it is for Dye.
