Bend, Ore., enjoys the Cascade Mountains and has made the transition from logging town to tourist mecca, such as mountain biking, rock climbing, and whitewater rafting. Its population doubled during the 1990s, and has grown by nearly 50 percent since that time. But its economy has not been on an even keel since the recession. There are around 60 percent fewer logging, mining, and construction jobs in the metro area. Manufacturing jobs have also been slipping, with 2,000 (55%) jobs lost.
