Online banking service down at Citizens Bank

For two days, Citizens Bank customers have complained that online banking is either slow or unavailable. Citizens Bank says it's a 'technical issue.'

A technical issue is bedeviling online banking at Citizens Bank, the bank confirmed Wednesday.

For two days, bank customers have reported trouble accessing their accounts online.

Sometimes performance is slow. At other times, customers can’t log in at all. Instead, the bank’s website displays a screen saying the service is “temporarily unavailable” due to “scheduled maintenance.”

In fact, the problem appears to be more serious.

“A technical issue is affecting access to online banking,” Jim Hughes, a spokesman for Citizens Financial Group, said in a statement to the Monitor. Citizens operates 1,520 branches in 12 states and has assets of $132 billion.

Customers were not amused.

“How many hours of downtime is this now?” tweeted Phillipe Winthrop of Boston in a Twitter message Wednesday afternoon.

“I haven't been able to log into my @CitizensBank account from any device for a few days,” complained John Paul Titlow of Philadelphia in another tweet Wednesday.

The bank is urging patience and says that, despite the problems, all scheduled transactions will be processed on time. For unscheduled transactions, the bank suggests that its customers use other means of interaction.

“As we work to resolve this issue we encourage impacted customers to call us on one of our 24/7 customer service lines or to visit one of our branches for their banking needs,” Mr. Hughes said in his statement. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

The bank did not give an estimate about when the issue would be resolved.
