CMP: 182,000 in Maine without power

CMP says Irene knocked out businesses as well as homes. CMP will have complete assessment Monday.

| KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine

Tropical storm Irene has knocked out power to more than 200,000 homes and businesses in Maine and has left residents of Carrabassett Valley isolated because of a bridge failure and high water.

Central Maine Power was reporting 182,000 homes and businesses without electricity Sunday evening. Bangor Hydro Electric Co. was reporting more than 29,000 power outages, as well.

CMP spokesman John Carroll says workers will have a better idea of how long it'll take to restore power after an assessment is completed Monday.

In Franklin County, officials say a bridge on Route 27 to the north of Carrabassett Valley failed and Route 27 to the south was covered by water. Emergency management spokesman Clyde Ross says that leaves the town cut off for the time being.
