Bhopal gas leak: On Dec. 3, 1984, methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a tank at the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant in Bhopal. More than 500,000 people were exposed, with estimates of more than 3,800 who died immediately and thousands more who died of related deaths and suffered gas-related illnesses. Union Carbide paid $470 million to the Indian government as a settlement, however full clean up has not happened, the abandoned plant’s waste materials are polluting the groundwater.
